Most of the organizations told us that the 800 numbers were reachable from
anyhere in the world. Some of you may still have to phone the local numbers
when the IN-WATT numbers are not reachable.

UNITED STATES
All 50 states and the District of Columbia offer FREE maps and other travel
material. Here is an alphabetically ordered list with phone numbers and
what they usually send with the map.
BTW, while they are on the phone, ask for their WEB pages addresses and
those for the other departments. I'd appreciate to learn these URL. I will
gladly post them on this page and will give credit to all collaborators.

(Visitors, events, skiing, lodging guides)
800-862-2543 No information about bicycling available.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) publishes bicycle
touring guides to several of their maintenance districts. They seem to try and
keep this a secret, and don't say anything about it on the web, but if you send
e-mail to the headquarters office contacts at:
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/tpp/offices/bike/sites.html
and ask for them, they'll snail mail you the maps free of charge.
The maps cover only state highways, and include information about climbs, food
and lodging availablity, and the likes. The information about which towns have bike shops is completely unreliable;
but there is hope, see: http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/tpp/offices/bike/sites_files/Bike_Bklt_3-03_print.pdf
